An Amsterdam museum card is not one specific product. For most visitors, the real choice is between the Museumkaart, a one-year Netherlands-wide museum pass, and the I amsterdam City Card, which is designed around a shorter Amsterdam visit. The I amsterdam product itself now has two versions: the time-based Total Experience and the activity-based Explorer.

The difference matters because the cards solve different problems. Museumkaart focuses almost entirely on museum admission and remains useful beyond Amsterdam. The I amsterdam City Card combines cultural attractions with other visitor services, while its Total Experience option adds local GVB transport.

Museumkaart: One Year of Museum Access

Museumkaart is the stronger fit when museums themselves are the priority. The pass covers more than 500 participating museums throughout the Netherlands, so its usefulness does not end at Amsterdam’s city limits. It can also cover museums that are absent from the I amsterdam City Card.

The standard annual price is €75 for adults aged 19 and over and €39 for visitors aged 18 and under. It should not be confused with a separate 31-day tourist pass. The 31-day rule applies to the temporary Museumkaart issued when the annual pass is purchased at the ticket desk of a participating museum.

Temporary Museumkaart rule: the temporary card is valid for 31 days and allows a maximum of five museum visits. Under the Museumkaart terms, the purchase at the museum counter itself counts as one visit even if the cardholder does not enter that museum. Registering the temporary card extends the pass to its normal one-year period; the original purchase date remains the start date. [Ref-5]

Visitors who do not live in the Netherlands can still buy a temporary Museumkaart at selected museums. After registration, a permanent physical card can be sent to an address within the EU. The digital Museumkaart is limited to EU residents because the required app is not available for devices registered outside the EU.

I amsterdam City Card: Total Experience or Explorer

Total Experience

Total Experience is the version most closely associated with the traditional I amsterdam City Card. It runs for 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 consecutive hours from activation and includes the card’s participating museums and attractions along with eligible GVB transport.

  • Museums and attractions: access to more than 70 participating locations and experiences.
  • GVB transport: eligible buses, trams, metro services and ferries within Amsterdam during the card’s active period.
  • Canal cruise: one included Amsterdam canal cruise from participating operators.
  • Bicycle rental: one 24-hour bike rental from participating providers.
  • Activity use: participating locations are generally available once per card rather than for repeated entry to the same attraction.

The transport benefit does not turn the card into a general Netherlands transport pass. NS trains, airport train travel and transport outside the participating GVB network are not included. A trip between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam therefore needs a separate ticket.

Explorer

Explorer uses a different model. Instead of buying a number of hours with transport included, the visitor chooses a package covering 3, 5 or 7 activities. The digital card remains valid for a maximum of five consecutive days after activation, unless all purchased activities are used sooner.

Explorer does not include GVB public transport. It is therefore more relevant to visitors who want a limited number of participating attractions over several days and already have another way to travel around Amsterdam.

Museumkaart vs I amsterdam at Major Amsterdam Museums

The most useful comparison is not the total number of participating venues but whether each pass covers the museums already on your list. Three of Amsterdam’s best-known museums illustrate why the distinction matters.

MuseumMuseumkaartI amsterdam City CardReservation Rule
RijksmuseumIncludedIncludedA start time is required for all visitors, including Museumkaart holders. The regular adult admission price is €25. [Ref-6]
Van Gogh MuseumIncluded at €0 admission with a valid MuseumkaartNot includedA dated and timed e-ticket is still required. Regular adult admission is €25. [Ref-7]
Anne Frank HouseAccepted with a €1 reservation chargeNot included; no City Card discountVisitors must reserve an online ticket with a time slot. [Ref-8]

This comparison can change the economics of a trip. A visitor planning the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House gets much broader coverage from Museumkaart than from the I amsterdam City Card. Someone visiting the Rijksmuseum alongside several City Card attractions, while also using GVB transport, a canal cruise and a bike rental, may obtain more usable value from Total Experience.

Reservations Do Not Disappear With a Pass

Neither pass should be treated as guaranteed walk-in access. Amsterdam museums can require a separate reservation or starting time even when admission itself is covered. This is especially relevant at museums with tightly controlled visitor capacity.

  • Rijksmuseum: reserve a starting time even when using Museumkaart or an eligible I amsterdam City Card.
  • Van Gogh Museum: Museumkaart holders still need the museum’s €0 e-ticket for a selected date and time.
  • Anne Frank House: admission is tied to an online timed ticket; Museumkaart does not remove the reservation requirement.
  • Other City Card locations: some attractions require advance time-slot booking. Reserving a time slot does not by itself activate the I amsterdam City Card.

Which Amsterdam Museum Pass Fits Which Trip?

The correct choice depends on the exact museums and services you expect to use. A simple museum count is not enough because Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House, for example, affect the two passes very differently.

  • Choose Museumkaart for a museum-heavy trip: it is better suited to visitors planning several participating museums, especially when the list includes Van Gogh Museum or museums outside Amsterdam.
  • Choose Total Experience for a short Amsterdam stay: it makes more sense when several included attractions are combined with GVB transport, a canal cruise or bicycle rental.
  • Choose Explorer for a fixed attraction list: the 3-, 5- and 7-activity versions suit visitors who want selected City Card attractions but do not need the included transport of Total Experience.
  • Buy individual tickets when the list is short: if only one or two paid museums matter, compare their normal ticket prices with the full pass price before buying either card.

Calculating Whether the Card Saves Money

For Museumkaart, compare the €75 adult price with the normal admission prices of the participating museums you actually expect to visit. Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum currently cost €25 each for a regular adult ticket, so those two visits alone total €50. The annual card becomes more attractive as additional participating museums are added, particularly if the trip extends beyond Amsterdam.

For Total Experience, use the duration you genuinely need rather than the largest package available. Compare the appropriate €67, €94, €115, €130 or €140 card price with the admission charges for your included attractions plus the GVB journeys, canal cruise and bike rental you would otherwise purchase. Do not assign value to a benefit you would not have bought separately.

Explorer should be compared against the normal admission prices of the exact three, five or seven activities chosen. Because it excludes public transport, GVB savings should not be included in that calculation.

Activation and Usage Rules That Matter

  • Total Experience uses consecutive hours: a 48-hour card runs for 48 hours after activation rather than simply covering two calendar dates.
  • Explorer uses consecutive days and an activity limit: it ends after five consecutive days or after the selected 3, 5 or 7 activities have been used, whichever happens first.
  • A reservation is not the same as activation: booking a required City Card time slot does not activate the I amsterdam card.
  • Museumkaart and reservations are separate: participating museums may still require advance booking even though the admission charge is covered.
  • Temporary Museumkaart has a strict visit cap: registration matters if more than five museum visits are planned during its temporary period.

Questions About Amsterdam Museum Passes

Is the temporary Museumkaart unlimited for 31 days?

No. Before registration and replacement with the permanent card, the temporary Museumkaart permits a maximum of five museum visits within 31 days. The museum-counter purchase counts as one of those visits under the current terms.

Does the I amsterdam City Card include Van Gogh Museum?

No. Van Gogh Museum is excluded from both Total Experience and Explorer. Museumkaart is accepted there, but a dated and timed e-ticket must still be booked.

Does the I amsterdam City Card include Anne Frank House?

No. Anne Frank House is not included in Total Experience or Explorer, and the museum does not offer an I amsterdam Card discount. Museumkaart is accepted with the museum’s reservation charge, but an online timed ticket remains mandatory.
