Gnatalie, the Green-Boned Sauropod

NHM Commons contains Gnatalie, a composite mount made from several specimens belonging to a Diplodocus-like sauropod. The skeleton measures more than 75 feet long. Its unusual green color comes from celadonite mineral infilling that entered the bones during fossilization. The original museum opened as the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art on November 6, 1913. Architects Frank Hudson and William A. D. Munsell combined Spanish Renaissance ornament, Romanesque arches, brick walls, and a Beaux-Arts floor plan. The central rotunda measures 75 feet in diameter, while its dome rises 58 feet beneath a stained-glass skylight approximately 20 feet across.[Ref-10]

The institution adopted its present natural-history identity after the art department moved to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1963. Later renovation strengthened and restored the 1913 Building while retaining its marble, mosaic floor, stained glass, and historic spatial character.

NHM Commons adds 75,000 square feet of new and refreshed indoor-outdoor space. Its welcome center, landscaped plaza, theater, cafe, community displays, and Gnatalie mount can be accessed through a more open entrance facing Exposition Park.
